As much as I have many problems with union hierarchy. Unions do/did serve a purpose. Ultimately, they prove Marx wrong.
Marx believed that with Capitalism, eventually the worker would overthrow the capitalist and establish a social utopia. Unions are the natural "release valve" of Capitalism.
It's not until socialists (ie His Presidency and other progressives owning GM) give unions the power to control companies that Marx is vindicated. So, it isn't the worker that overthrows, it's the socialist himself.
